How Dare Me – On “You Are The Quarry”

[sixth life-in-music post]

And just before I begin to think he has nothing but contempt for the land of the free and home of the brave, he addresses the land –

“and I have got nothing to offer you, just this heart, deep and true, which you say you don’t need”

And just before I begin to think he’s another boring anti-Christ, or the usual brat who thinks God owes him, he actually acknowledges his God-given virtues, by slapping them back at Him –

“I have forgiven Jesus, for all of the love he placed in me when there’s no one I can turn to with this love”

And just when I thought I’ve heard all there is to be heard about falling in love, and cynicism, he marries the two, in faith and in hope, in heartbreak and in humor –

“and you have never been in love until you’ve seen the dawn rise behind the home for the blind”

But you know what’s most endearing about Morrissey? He’s not afraid to sing out his awkwardness, and his shame, and his stupidity, and his disgrace –

“so close your eyes and think of someone you physically admire and let me kiss you”

I love him, what else can I say? Marching off to bed now. Will let him coo in my ears until I fall asleep. Until I see the dawn rise behind the home for the blind.
